All of the old ceiling is now on the floor. The ceiling, with the old lath exposed.  We left the old lath, mainly because there is blown in insulation in the cavities above it, and also to give the drywall screws more places to connect to. A better shot of the pile of ceiling rubble.
Once we began removing the texture from the ceiling, we started finding more and more areas where the plaster was damaged beyond simple repair.
