Having never sanded a floor before, I did quite a bit of research before we began. Here is a link to a very good article that basically tells you exactly how to do it: How to sand and finish wood floors
We used a shop vac to vacuum the floor. We wanted to make sure there wasn’t any sort of construction debris that would interfere with the sander. We also stuffed newspaper into all of the electrical openings and the heat register to make sure no sanding dust would get into them.

The drum sander made quick work of the multiple layers of old paint. Even though it has a dust bag, it still created quite a bit of dust, as can be seen in the photo above. This photo was taken just before finishing up the final run of the coarse grit paper.
