Like the woodwork in this room, the door hardware was covered in several layers of paint.
After much research, we decided to try the “boiling” method. This method consists of placing the hardware into a pot of boiling water for a while. The heat causes the paint to soften up and easily be scraped off of the metal. It works fairly well, but some types of paint can be pretty stubborn. Also, the hardware took on a “greyish filmy” look, and we thought that we had maybe ruined it. But, apparently that was just paint residue and came off fairly easily using dish soap and a nylon brush.
Once polished, the hardware looked brand new.
